Questions, answered

In shoulder and off-peak season (October to April, excluding Christmas and February festival week), you can find rooms in Whitehorse from about CAD 95-125 at places like the Stop In Family Hotel on 4th Avenue or the River View Hotel on Front Street. Dawson City drops even lower in winter, with the Downtown Hotel around CAD 90 a night. Summer more than doubles those rates.

Cheap hotels in Yukon: how Yukon Hotels works

Yukon Hotels is a curated guide to the whole territory, not just Whitehorse. We cover downtown Whitehorse and the Riverdale side, Dawson City on the Klondike, Haines Junction at the gateway to Kluane National Park, Watson Lake near the BC border, Carcross on the South Klondike Highway, and the smaller stops along the Alaska and Dempster Highways like Teslin and Eagle Plains. Each area page lays out what a night actually costs, which streets to sleep on, and what you can walk to versus what needs a truck.

We are not the booking engine. When you tap See price, we hand you to app.impt.io, which aggregates over 8 million hotels and matches or beats direct rates. Every confirmed booking funds one verified tonne of carbon removal, at no extra cost. You pay what you would pay on any other site; the tonne is on IMPT. That is the whole model: honest local guidance from people who have driven the Dempster in October, plus a booking layer that quietly does the climate work.

Where to stay in Yukon

Downtown Whitehorse is where 90 percent of first visits should start. The grid between 2nd Avenue and 4th Avenue, from Main Street south to Hanson, puts you a five-minute walk from Klondike Rib and Salmon, Burnt Toast Cafe, the MacBride Museum and the Millennium Trail along the Yukon River. The Edgewater Hotel, Coast High Country Inn and Best Western Gold Rush Inn all sit inside this box. Riverdale, across the Robert Campbell Bridge, is quieter and cheaper but you will drive for dinner.

Dawson City is a different creature: unpaved streets, wooden boardwalks, and the Downtown Hotel with its Sourtoe Cocktail. Stay on Front Street or 2nd Avenue to walk to Diamond Tooth Gerties, the SS Keno and Klondike Kate's. Haines Junction, 158 km west of Whitehorse, is the base for Kluane; the Raven Hotel and Parkside Inn put you 30 minutes from the Kathleen Lake trailhead and the Kings Throne hike. Carcross suits day-trippers who want Emerald Lake and Carcross Desert at sunrise.

What hotels in Yukon actually cost

In Whitehorse, expect CAD 95-140 a night from November through April at mid-range downtown properties like the Stop In Family Hotel, River View Hotel or Skky Hotel near the airport. From mid-June to late August the same rooms run CAD 220-310, and anything under CAD 180 in July books out fast. Yukon Quest week in early February and Adaka Cultural Festival in late June both spike downtown rates. The Coast High Country Inn and Edgewater sit at the top of the range, around CAD 260-340 in peak.

Dawson City is roughly 15 percent cheaper than Whitehorse in summer (CAD 180-260 at the Downtown Hotel, Aurora Inn or Bombay Peggy's) and much cheaper in winter, when several properties close entirely and the ones that stay open sit around CAD 90-120. Haines Junction runs CAD 140-200 year-round. Add 5 percent GST to all quoted rates; there is no provincial sales tax in Yukon, which keeps things a little simpler than BC or Alberta.

Getting around Yukon and when to go

A rental vehicle is non-negotiable outside Whitehorse. Distances are large and honest: Whitehorse to Dawson is 533 km on the Klondike Highway, roughly 6 hours with fuel stops at Carmacks and Pelly Crossing. Whitehorse to Haines Junction is 158 km, about 1 hour 45 minutes on the Alaska Highway. The Dempster Highway to Inuvik is 736 km of unpaved gravel from the junction near Dawson and requires two spare tires. Husky Bus offers a Whitehorse-Dawson run in summer for about CAD 149 one way if you truly cannot drive.

Best months are late February to mid-March for aurora with tolerable cold (minus 15 to minus 25), and September for autumn colours on the Tombstone tundra with far fewer people than July. Peak summer (late June to mid-August) has 20 hours of daylight and the highest prices. November and early December are the quietest and cheapest, but many Dawson businesses shut for the season. Check road conditions on 511yukon.ca before any drive north of Whitehorse between October and April.
